I have watched this interview a 1000 times

Mallika Sherawat.  The whole thing - especially 3:50 ONWARDS.  She's first and foremost - a Bollywood actress and not a "popular" one  - thus automatically "not respected" as a woman, not to mention she's one of the first actresses in Bollywood to have kissed on screen.  Her first movie required her to kiss more than 10 times in a Bollywood movie - breaking for sure some sort of record.

People dismiss beautiful women so easily, not to mention ones that initially displayed their sex appeal as one of their plus points.  It makes me inherently sad to have people judge others' intelligence based on their beauty or sex appeal.

Mallika is a rare breed - especially for "Indian" culture.  Independent, presumably sexual - at least comfortable with portraying sensuousness on screen, and has acted in international films opposite Jackie Chan and in other regional films besides Indian cinema.  She came under fire a while ago due to her comments on women in India.

Note that this was at a time that "India's daughter" Jyoti Singh who made International headlines and was treated in Singapore was brutally murdered.  Jyoti was raped and ultimately died due to her injuries.  Jyoti was raped,   by a metal rod, desecrated, and horrifyingly more.

When Mallika came back to India and was questioned by a journalist she for once in an actresses; life actually had facts to back up her statement, did not try to be politically correct, had 100% the truth in terms of what she originally said and why she said what she did. In short - she was smart, intelligent, spoke beautiful hindi and this is one of the truest and most intelligent things I've heard from this industry.

Said with PASSION, strength, etc.  I cried re-watching this as I have many times before (I'm obviously still tearing up.)

It's actresses like Mallika who 1st of all SPEAK THE PRIMARY LANGUAGE OF HER COUNTRY who can make a change in society in India.  Women, especially those pursuing a career in one of the most sexualized acting industries in the world often don't speak out for fear of a backlash.  I'm still in tears copying what she said in my head.  Moving.

I think in song lyrics a lot – NOT MY OWN I’m not a lyricist I just REMEMBER song lyrics. 

I carry a notepad with me where I write down song lyrics that are playing in my head (it’s kind of like a diary but written in song.. if I read it I know what I was feeling at that time.. or sometimes it’s just simply a song stuck in my head that has no rhyme or reason for being in my head).

People will never forget how you made them feel.  This is what I want to do in life… I want to make people feel.  I want to be able to make as many people feel as I can.  If I can make someone feel something, then I have distracted them in that one moment from whatever is going on in their life and that one moment of their life is a gift to me… it would be mine and weaved into my tapestry, into my story and would connect me with them.

This is why I want to be an actor (and this is why since I’m not an actor right now – I write!). 

I’m jealous of Oprah!  Not because of the money (although I wouldn’t say no to a billion dollars…actually maybe I would… too much friggin money)… but because her job allowed her to make other people feel, every single day (and this is why I love Shah Rukh Khan…although mine and his story/love affair is a long story).  I’m jealous of Oprah because everyday when she was standing on her show she knew that that was exactly where she was supposed to be.  Not a lot of people can say that.  That’s a blessing. 

Have you ever watched the musical Burlesque?  In it, Christina Aguilera's character leaves her small town when she realizes that there is literally no one else in that town who’s life she would want.  There was no one there who inspired her enough to make her want to stay.  This is kind of how I feel about Vancouver.  There is NO ONE here whose life I would want, there is no one here, no career position that has inspired me enough to want to stay here and there is no position or job that I could create even to fulfill what I want.  I know what I want, and it’s just not here.  The only thing keeping me in Vancouver right now is my family – I can’t even say my friends because I know I would meet my friends if I moved anywhere else in the world but I can’t just pick up and relocate my family.

I’ve lived in Vancouver for over 15 years now and there came a point where I was overseas and was boarding my flight to come home to YVR and I was just like… what is the point?  What do I have there?  That moment was terrifying to me – that I could have lived somewhere for over a decade and feel that besides my family I have nothing really physically keeping me there.  It was… terrifying, sad, humbling.  It was kind of my “Eat pray love” moment except I couldn’t sell off all my things like her and travel the world with a book deal waiting for me because I have a FAMILY and I have RESPONSIBILITIES… but how I wish I could have!!

Living an uninspired life is a fate worse than death.  I hope I get to fulfill my dreams and I hope you do too!!!  Goodnight everyone.

Hindi Movies

Hindi movies have been my life.  I’ve grown up watching them, I’ve lived them, I’ve breathed them.  I cannot imagine myself without them - they literally have defined who I have become.  I feel that so many emotions that I have experienced in life can be found somehow in some way in a hindi movie.  I directly relate to so many bits in certain movies.  That being said, I haven’t really watched a love story hindi movie (not all hindi movies are love stories!) in a while… you kinda have to not scoff when you’re watching them and I kinda scoff when I do now… anyways I have a “Love” playlist on my mp3 that hasn’t really gotten a lot of listening to in the last year or so BUT this past December when my grandmother passed away and I was lying in Singapore on the hard floor with the fan on and my family around me… I started listening to this song above.
And I kept listening to it, day in and day out… on the mrt, on the winding roads to Malaysia, at night… etc.  The beginning of this song…it takes me to another world, one with love and hope and romance and dreams, a world I hadn’t really visited in a while.  It was nice there, but scary.  I want to be the girl who can still believe in all of this again and lol I guess just be innocent again.  I thought I would share this song with you guys.

Break Ke Baad

If only life were really like a hindi movie.  If you haven’t watched this film yet…spoiler alert. 
Let’s see… this movie has some decent songs, nothing I’m going to put on my mp3 player but they were ok to watch, the characters were fresh and nice to watch and the story line was not too bad.  Deepika desperately needs a new make up artist, or a new dermatologist because for someone so beautiful her skin is so lacklustre and the complete opposite of luminescent that it detracts from her beauty.  Step one is she needs some blush.
The only thing I have against this movie is once again the “love conquers all” theme seeps into the movie and ruins everything.  It started off okay showing the love between Aaliya?  and Gelato?… or was it Gulati? or maybe his name was Abhay?  Sorry AALIYA AND ABHAY there you go. 
BRIEF SYNOPSIS: They met when they were kids, had a mutual obsession for hindi movies… she was not your typical girl (other than the love for SRK and obsession for hindi movies bit).  She wasn’t the kind of girl who fantasized about her dream wedding lets just put it that way.  She applied to go to school in Australia without telling her mom and boyfriend and then she told her bf Abhay she wanted a break and kicked it to Australia.  He got insecure and clingy, subsequently she got mad, he followed her there, she got even more mad and officially broke up with him.  He stayed and refused to let go (or to leave the house she was sharing with 2 other roommates)…finally she thought he had moved on, he realizes she has moved on, she tells him to get married etc he leaves to go back to India.  He plans his wedding, the date is set everyone’s ready to roll, then she realized she actually did love him and flew back to India to propose to him only to find out that SURPRISE, he figured she would come back all along and the wedding that was scheduled was actually for the two of them.  They get married and live happily ever after.
I thought everything was pretty legit other than the end.  Aaliya seemed like a lot of people I know.  Sometimes people end relationships that they never thought that they would.  It’s hard for the Abhay’s of the world to deal with that and they often don’t believe it and so I thought it was interesting how they actually reflected this in the move.  I mean, Abhay was delusional in the movie.  I understand how he feels though… I mean you make promises to love a person no matter what, and to never let the relationship fail.  So all of a sudden when your love wants to end the relationship you think…is this just a test?  Didn’t I make a promise to never let this relationship end?  Maybe Aaliya thinks she wants a break up and then if I actually move on and she realizes that she made a mistake later, I gave up too early!  Maybe I’m supposed to wait this one out.  I mean, she loves me how can she not?  People expect you to realize that the relationship is over and to move on but do you just love a person and stop when they claim they stopped loving you?  Is that what love is…reliant on the other persons reciprocation?  Of course not!  That’s why you have to stick it through to the end Abhay!… love this person till you die and never love anyone else!  Until one day you wake up and realize… that she left you.  Something changes inside you after a certain amount of time and you realize…nothing can ever be the same again.  She left you, she didn’t want to try to sort it out, she was just done.  Finito.  And then you get somewhat mad.  You DO NOT make a fake wedding and chop her name on the wedding card “knowing” that she would come running from Australia to profess her love.  THIS IS THE PART OF HINDI MOVIES I HATE!!  It’s just not realistic.  And then when she does show up and she says she wants him back, HE DOESN’T EVEN YELL AT HER!  I would be like UM HELLOOOOO you forgot about all of this when you said we were done?  It would hurt too much to take you back and I don’t want to get hurt again?  Bye bye?  But no of course, they get married and live happily ever after. 
Bah humbug.  I’m going to bed.  Goodnight.  NO WAIT ONE MORE THING….WHAT KIND OF MESSAGE DOES THIS SEND KIDS?  Be a romantic, never move on with your life, have faith that the person who very calmly tells you she’s done is actually just confused?  That’s so wrong!  Honestly I would much rather the movie have shown them moving on and getting married to other people.  Sure maybe they wouldn’t love that person as much as they loved each other but that’s life.  It’s a good thing I’m not a script writer huh?  Everyone would leave my movies like whoa I can’t believe it ended like that and then everyone would lose hope in the goodness of life.  Well you know what they say about hope?  It breeds eternal misery.  On that bright note I bid you adieu.

Sonam Kapoor

One good thing I can say about this girl is that:  She is not a whore. What exactly is a whore?  A whore is someone who does one of the following:
  • work as a prostitute
  • have unlawful sex with a whore
  • compromise oneself for money or other gains; "She whored herself to Hollywood"
At no point in her career be it on the silver screen or in her public appearances has Sonam Kapoor made herself out to be a whore.  She has to my knowledge never danced raunchily, worn indecent clothing or just in general come across as whorish.  In fact, this is the most indecent picture of her I could find:

She has not sold herself, danced at receptions for $ or marketed a product she doesn’t believe in (for the most part).  I’m actually all of a sudden very impressed with this girl and I never was before.  One does not know a lot about her personal life or her friends and that’s saying something for a Bollywood celebrity! 
Watching the movie Aisha was when I realized that she was not a whore.  If it was anyone else in that movie (example: Priyanka Chopra), they would have showed a lot more skin, cleavage, legs… and I was impressed that Sonam didn’t.  Maybe it’s because Sonam’s family is well off and so she has never had to whore herself out whereas other girls have to do anything and everything to get their dream?  Maybe it’s because Sonam Kapoor is tall?  Maybe it’s because she likes fashion and so that translates into her being less hoochy than most Bollywood celebs?  I mean if you flip through any fashion magazine you would see that models usually aren’t arching their back to pop their booty and jut out their chests…they usually are bending their back forward as if they have a tummy ache.  High fashion (haute couture) isn’t really geared towards “looking hot” so naturally people who appreciate fashion such as Sonam, dress more to look chic than they do to look hot.  Sonam is the type of girl who dresses more for herself and other girls than she does for men.
Whatever the case, I’m glad that there is finally one person that girls can look up to in the Bollywood industry, and I am a little bit surprised to say this girl is Sonam.  Thus far I am impressed with the way she has handled her career and I’m getting sick of the other girls in Bollywood.  I miss the Rani’s, Kajols and Preity’s!  I miss the love stories.  I miss girls and guys who didn’t look like models and who just looked like NORMAL people with an edge.  The “normal” people that they have now (a.k.a the Genalia D’Souza type) are too average for my liking as they have no standout feature.  Rani looked normal but she had nice eyes and a beautiful smile, Preity had amazing dimples and a fresh faced quality..it seems like the only girls in Bollywood now are models or girls like Genalia who are just so BLAH!  As for the guys, they’re not even worth mentioning.  The original Khans are still the best and that’s really sad because they’re all like what 40 now?  FRESH TALENT NEEDED!
WAIT SIDE NOTE:  I think to enter this industry you have to have a certain amount of exposure in this day and age and I do not think girls who expose are worse than girls who don’t but basically I still think Sonam has handled herself well and it was worth a mention. 

Why Do I Write?

It’s been almost 2 years since my First Blog Post and I just thought I’d recap on why I write.  I write because I have to.  It’s a necessity for me, I am constantly writing no matter where I go, whether it’s tweeting/updating my status/writing blog topics and memo’s to myself on my phone, or while I’m at work writing in my notebook there about my thought processes, or at home on my blog or one of my personal diaries - - I have to write.  It makes me a little crazy though I must admit because when you think in your head your thoughts process so fast that you don’t even see it, it’s like boom boom boom.  However, when you write, you see your thought process flow out before you and when you see how your mind goes from one thing to another, and when you analyze yourself that much, you wander a little from the sane group.  It also makes me a little crazy because there’s so much of me that I have to use different diaries to cover different things or I’ll lose my mind.  One diary has my deepest darkest thoughts and feelings, one diary is more for fun so that I can exercise my mind and play with words, one is for brainstorming…etc etc.  Why can’t I have it all in one?…  It’s because I need to purge myself, I need to quickly rip out my dark side and then shut that book so I can focus on something else for a bit.  Imagine if I just had my blog as my one sole diary, imagine how traumatized yall would be reading it!?  Lol I’m doing yall a favour trust me!
I write for myself… I write to chronicle my life and so that when I look back one month, one year or one decade from now I can see who I was at that point of time.  Twitter for me is more a diary than anything else and same with Facebook statuses.  Yes I write to engage in conversation with the world but I’d say mainly its for me to look back on and see where I was and where I’ve come.
A diary entry of mine might simply be a list of songs on my playlist, or a header saying “Cozy” with a list of things that make me feel cosy and eventually it forms into a psychoanalysis of myself.  So as I said though, I do write for myself, these blog posts - -I love that people can read them, that even one person may have smiled at a post of mine or felt any kind of emotion at something that I wrote; it’s an amazing feeling and it’s a reason why I share my posts to the world, but I also feel exposed.  I feel exposed because my posts are ME, they’re not generic posts on fashion or Bollywood or technology like most blogs are, they’re posts about ME and my thoughts and beliefs.  I feel like people who read this blog in its entirety will walk away knowing a fair slice of me (not a whole lot mind you but a good glimpse) and it’s scary to open yourself to judgement in that way.  I am glad that I didn’t center my blog around a certain theme though this is my blog and I write about anything and everything I want…why restrict myself?

Before you all start pouncing on me, I happen to think Aishwarya Rai looks beautiful in both pictures (it’s hard not to when you look like her cough I’m biased cough).  I thought it’d be great to post this because it’s just enlightening to see the work and effort that goes into a photo shoot (not so much of it is the retouching but body positioning and lighting help to get that magic shot).
In the picture above, Aishwarya has bags under her eyes, a looser neck than in the picture below, wider body positioning, bigger boobs, a slight furrow or tension in her forehead and a crumply
dress.  In the picture below, her arm size has definitely been reduced, her entire frame is smaller than in the above picture and it looks like she’s been positioned further back, her dress is fixed, her boobs look more “streamlined” shall we say, her eyebags have been reduced – although they are still there, the tension in her forehead is still there but because of the way she is posing you can’t really see much.  Her pose in the second picture is a million times better than the first picture, as she looks considerably less “hefty” and a lot more delicate.
I def think she looks older in the above picture, but wow she looks so breathtaking!  The second picture, while tightened and more youthful, does seem a little robotic and plasticky to me.  I wish more magazines would release untouched images from photoshoots… they are very enlightening!

So below are a bunch of pics I got off sites like www.plasticdesis.com and others.. these young lads and ladies are rumoured to have undergone plastic surgery. It’s pretty hard to tell because pictures are often photoshopped as it is but here they are.. make your own decision! I think they were all beautiful before and after!!!!!!!
aishwarya-dhoom pretty-aishwarya aishwarya-nokia Apparently The Most Beautiful Woman in the World Aishwarya Rai had her smile fixed - dental work and lately she’s been rumoured to have had botox injections but regardless, that doesn’t really count because she’s like 30 something now and her features have been the same it’s more a matter of general upkeep! I heart her.
My biggest heartbreak was when I found out that most of the South American pageant queens have had extensive plastic surgery(actually most contestants in general but I always found the South American ones some of the prettiest in the pageant so it was a bigger heartbreak for me). All big time beauty pageants have plastic surgeons on board, and as winning the crown (Miss Universe for example) is considered a huge, huge honour for many countries and competition is fierce… plastic surgery is highly recommended, if not necessary for the entrants.
Now, I’m not one of those jealous girls who say “that chick is so ugly without makeup” or “that girl is only pretty because of plastic surgery”. I strongly believe that most girls need to have a good base in order for their surgery to be successful. It is usually the minor tweaks that get the best results, so a good base is essential. I don’t think girls need plastic surgery at all but it’s definitely a personal choice. One one hand you can look at the girl who got plastic surgery and say “wow, you are so vain to care so much about your appearance that you would have surgery!” OR you could say “wow, you clearly aren’t vain at all because to further your career you didn’t even mind changing your face and having surgery.”. Most girls get surgery because they are told that it will further their career - as a model, as an actress, as a news anchor, etc. If I was told that the only thing holding me back from being the next (female) Anderson Cooper was a nose job, I think I would do it (get the nose job). I would regret it for the rest of my life if I didn’t take that opportunity for myself and for my family. What’s in your appearance anyway, I’d still be me! Of course it sucks that I wouldn’t be accepted the way I am (hypothetically speaking) and of course it would suck to look in the mirror everyday and not see the REAL me, because I love the way I am now, but I think I would rather accomplish my dreams and be happy.. because I would totally, totally love to have his job, than be so vain as to not take up an opportunity because I was letting my love for my appearance colour my dreams. I know it’s all a little backwards but I think I gave a good scenario so hopefully you understand. You see, the problem isn’t that a girl would choose to do plastic surgery to further her career, the problem is that getting plastic surgery actually does further that person’s career!

Zac Efron for one..He LOOKS like he’s had the bridge of his nose narrowed and more defined and the tip of his nose narrowed as well. The rest of him looks about the same… I’m sure the bronzer is helping to define his cheekbones and make his face look chiselled and part of it is probably just puberty! Would he be as big of a star if he remained the guy on the left? Probably not! Maybe for 12 year olds the sweet dude on the left was ok, but Zac has now definitely broadened his appeal to include ladies (and men) of all ages.

Heidi Montag from the Hills is strongly, strongly rumoured to have had a nose job and I would say she’s admitted to it but I’m too lazy to search for a reliable source so let’s just let the pictures do the talking. . ok well in my opinion.. she looks cute before, and her old nose was fine..

One of my favourites.. Ashley Simpson! Her nose job was confirmed by her father Joe Simpson who claimed that she got the nose job to help with her breathing. Right, that’s what they all say. Looks to me like she had her chin shaved down a little as well but no reports on that as of yet. Why is this one one of my favourites? Simple, it’s because she went from looking like Ashley Simpson, to looking like a regular, cookie cutter Barbie doll run of the mill blonde girl from California. Sure, she’s hotter now, but it’s really such a pity.

Now Tyra Banks …one of my favourite models of all time (!!!) is also rumoured to have had a nose job. She’s proven that her boobs are real (God bless her!) but has never talked about the rumoured nose job. Sometimes it looks like a case of clever makeup, but sometimes it’s like whoa nose job. Who knows, or should I say who nose?

Camilla Belle.. this chick is a total hottie and completely underrated in the hotness department. If it is a nose job it’s nicely done. The original shape is pretty much maintained, it looks like she’s done something that is very popular nowadays in the plastic surgery world and that is just getting a smaller version of your nose to make it look more natural. That being said the tip of her nose looks a little narrower than in the before picture. Gorgeous before and after but the tan definitely helps this woman out.

Gisele Bundchen or Gisele Bundchen Brady whatever her name is now… let’s JUST talk about the noses for all the Victoria Secret models shall we ‘cause otherwise we’ll be here forever! The bridge of her nose looks narrower, the overall look more streamlined, all bumps appear to be removed. Miss World Priyanka Chopra. Besides an obvious change in her makeup and the addition of coloured contact lenses (*lame because she wears them all the time and supposedly even has eye problems now because of it!*) her nose looks much, much smaller. She used to have a rather bulbous tip that was slightly off center and that looks fixed now as well as the bridge of the nose (narrower).

Hollywood A-lister Scarlett Johansson also is rumoured to have had a nose job and to me it really looks like she’s had some cheek implants or fillers to give her face a bit more contour and definition. The tip of her nose looks to be about the same, it wasn’t a bad nose to begin with, but yea..smoothened and narrower bridge.

I don’t know to say about Katrina Kaif She just looks different to me now, I don’t know what it is. Her jaw looks narrower, more feminine and a little bit more defined than in the before pictures. Her nose has lost the slant and has more definition in the tip which helps a GREAT deal. Not much else to say on her.. Camilla Belle and her kind of look alike. Both are cute :)

Blake Lively I was shocked at this one really. I thought she was naturally this pretty but the pictures seem to point to something other than natural beauty. The “new” nose looks shorter, doesn’t droop downwards, is straighter and free of bumps and has a very defined bridge and tip which was lacking in the previous pictures. In all other aspects as well she’s def been given the A list makeover imo.. various laser and chemical peels and treatments for the skin and some awesome makeup. Her hair always looks super gorgeous – I suspect extensions. Other than that she looks natural, am glad I don’t see a fish pout on her.

Who is she you ask? Minissha Lamba. Ok, I guess that didn’t clear up much.. she’s an actress albeit not a very famous one. She looks less “Indian” and a lot sexier (the two – looking less Indian and looking sexier are not related at all just two separate facts that I happened to notice) in the bottom right picture but she looks cuter and more human/less alien in the top right. Rani Mukherjee, everyone’s favourite husky voiced, talented actress. She had a pretty awesome nose before but it appears narrower and more generic now. I think it makes the rest of her face look wider…her cheeks look quite big compared to her nose in the bottom right picture. Once you mess with one thing it changes the proportions and look of everything else. Lucky for her she has big eyes and big lips so it saves her proportions a little bit. She can act so I love her.. and her eyes are just amazing.. goodness.

Shilpa Shetty. Obvious. Old nose job where they basically gave you a generic “perfect” nose without caring what your face shape was like. I think it’s too pinched. She’s still cute in the top left pic.

Kareena Kapoor. She’s pretty dang gorgeous without makeup. Like, stunning! Anyway, I would say – nose job and jaw surgery. I think her jaw looks completely different, it’s so defined and angular now whereas before it didn’t have that strong L shape, more of a U. Re: her nose…the tip of the nose is the biggest difference. Megan Fox. What a babe. Rumoured to have had an injectable filler popped in her nose to get rid of the bump. Don’t know what else she’s rumoured to have had but…quite a few I’m guessing to go from 12 year old to the world’s hottest woman.

Preity Zinta !!!!!!!! Absolutely adore her, she’s such a sweetheart! Her nose looks different for sure, narrower and more defined (the usual) . She’s been rumoured to have eye surgery and a brown surgery before the shooting of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (KANK)

I just think it’s super cool that there is this technology available where like.. “fans” can get in touch with “stars”.  As soon as Amitabh Bachchan started blogging I was like omg.. this is huge.  Ever since I was little I used to wonder what “stars” were like, what they ate, where they went, what their day to day schedules were like.  I don’t think this fascination with celebrity will be something that I will ever grow out of, nor do I ever want to.  I like being amazed, and I like being thrilled.  I got a super huge rush when I saw Mickey Mouse.  It was SO AWESOME.
I went on Karan Johar’s page and he has updates like: “sitting in the office with SRK”.. and you just think I want that!  Then when you see Demi Lovato (hope I spelt her name right.. I think she’s a Disney starlet?) posting about how she’s getting off her tour bus and going on a private jet.. you just think.. I want THAT!  Maybe Twitter isn’t the greatest idea.. it makes you that much closer to everything that you can’t have.
Sigh.

So I’ve recently joined Twitter and I think I might become addicted to this thing.  People often wonder what’s so great about it seeing as how on Facebook you can post pictures and do all kinds of funky stuff.  I think the thing that keeps people flocking (pun intended) to Twitter is the real time action that you see on there…not to mention the celebrity mania.  “Stars” like Mallika Sherawat from Bollywood, Self proclaimed Armenian Princess = Kim Kardashian and influential people such as Anderson Cooper and Larry King all have Twitter accounts that they are constantly updating. 
It’s super interesting to see what’s going on in their lives (stalker world that we live in) and of course it gives a little thrill when you get mentioned (as you see above, Mallika Sherawat responded with an “@queensharin” to a little query of mine).  It looks like the aim is to have as many followers as you can because of course, everyone wants to be their own mini celebrity.
Both Facebook and Twitter reek of a culture that is voyeuristic and self obsessed.  I don’t see sites like these becoming obsolete anytime soon.  Hey, if you can’t beat ‘em, join them! ;)

Do they even look like the same girl? Ok, clearly, Sonam Kapoor is still pretty because her cheekbones are sky high and she has a nice nose, but WOW she really needs the makeup to shine! Without the makeup, she looks like a normal, albeit pretty, girl off the street. *Lightbulb* so thisss is why stars are always wearing sunglasses! Here I was thinking it was just because their eyes hurt from the flashbulbs...silly me.

Slumdog Millionare, a tale of an orphan in India who overcomes hardship (and falls in love with the Gorgeous with a capital G - Frieda Pinto who is pictured above in the gold Christian Lacroix gown that I disliked immensely) bagged four awards at the Golden Globes for Best Drama, Best Director (Danny Boyle), best Screenplay (Simon Beaufoy) and Best Original Score (A.R Rahman).


It was super exciting and a little disconcerting to see personalities that I recognized from Indian cinema mingling with the likes of Angelina Jolie and Sean Combs. For some reason I just found it incredibly cute when AR Rahman hugged Sean Combs (forever known to me as P. Diddy) upon receiving his award, and my mind flashed through what it would be like if both Hollywood and "Bollywood" were to join together more often.

Can you imagine Brad Pitt being nominated for A Curious Case.. and Shah Rukh Khan being nominated for Rab Ne...in the same Best Actor category? Or Angelina dancing alongside Akshay Kumar in an action flick, while Will Smith saves the world from robots with Aishwarya Rai? The thing with us Indians however, is that we would be watching both movies and thinking about what the West is thinking about Akshay and Aishwarya. Do they think they're good looking, do they think their accent is funny, are they going to be as popular as a regular Hollywood star now, are people going to accept them, are people laughing at our song and dance routines? It seems to me that the East is always seeking the West's approval. When Aishwarya Rai became the first Indian to be on the jury at Cannes, Indians all around the world waited on bated breath to see what she would wear and whether she would represent India well. If you ask any Indian who they think would represent India best internationally, there's a pretty high chance they'll say Aishwarya Rai. Why is this? Probably because she fits the West's mold of what is conventionally "beautiful". It's funny because most Indians don't look like her, so if she fit's the ever influential Western hemisphere's mold of what is beautiful, than most of us don't even qualify.

Even though the Indian Film Industry churns out more movies, has a wider audience than a Hollywood flick does, and has actors that are truly recognized worldwide, Hindi film actors still constantly gush about Hollywood actors. When Akshay Kumar met Snoop Dogg, you can bet it wasn't Snoop D-o- double G that was super excited . When Angelina presented at the Filmfare Awards with Shah Rukh Khan, all of America wasn't waiting and watching to see what she would wear, and if she would embarass America. Americans don't care, so why do we? When Shah Rukh Khan presented at the Golden Globes on Sunday, he mentioned something about pelvic thrusting. There were comments aplenty on youtube videos and various forums about how he "embarassed us". Honestly, I'm sick of Indian's all around the world overanalyzing what our celebrities do when they come into contact with anything Hollywood.

While I'm glad that AR Rahman was the first Indian to win a Golden Globe, I was equally glad when he won a Filmfare.
